An Intimate Spring Santa Barbara Courthouse Wedding

A Santa Barbara Courthouse Wedding captured on a mix of 35mm film and digital. Marissa and Sam had an intimate outdoor ceremony in the courtyards of the Santa Barbara Courthouse. It was the first sunny day of spring and the space was bursting with vibrant spring flowers. It was such a life giving and inspiring day to be a part of.

They got ready for the day at the quaint Plalihouse Hotel, which was such a perfect space to prep for the day. It’s right in the center of town and with its Spanish architecture, cozy nature, and bright poolside area (with the cutest pink umbrellas), it was such a fun space to get started.

Marissa and Sam’s Personal Touches:

Marissa and Sam decided to have their ceremony outside in the courtyard of the Santa Barbara Courthouse. It was such a gorgeous choice for their wedding because the historic Spanish architecture of the courthouse was such a beautiful backdrop. They stood in the lush green grass to exchange their vows and become husband and wife. They had their closest loved ones in attendance to witness this special moment.

They ended their day with pizza, cake and champagne. The whole celebration was nontraditional, chill, and absolutely perfect. They explored the grounds and took pictures throughout the space together after all of the planned festivities were done. There are endless beautiful options for pictures together at the Santa Barbara Courthouse, as you’ll soon see. From the murals, art, and incredible historic interior spaces to the lush green courtyards filled with endless floral filled nooks and noteworthy tiles and walkways, Marissa and Sam got to enjoy some sweet together moments as newlyweds.

Why We Love a Santa Barbara Courthouse Wedding

A Santa Barbara Courthouse wedding is one of the most picturesque and romantic ways to tie the knot in California. With its Spanish-Colonial Revival architecture, hand-painted murals, and lush sunken gardens, the courthouse feels like a luxury getaway setting right in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. The white stucco walls, red-tiled roof, and iconic clock tower offer a cinematic backdrop that’s beautiful in every season.

It’s not just beautiful—it’s also incredibly versatile. Whether you’re eloping with just a few loved ones or hosting a more intimate wedding with up to 100 guests, the Santa Barbara Courthouse offers a timeless and elegant space that feels special without being overly formal. The outdoor gardens provide an idyllic setting for vows under the open sky, surrounded by palm trees, archways, and warm golden light.

Things to Know When Planning a Santa Barbara Courthouse Wedding

If you’re planning a Santa Barbara Courthouse wedding, there are a few things to keep in mind to make your day seamless. First, it’s a public courthouse, so permits are required for both ceremonies and photography in the garden areas—especially if you plan to bring chairs, arches, or larger groups. Be sure to reserve your spot well in advance through the city’s official permitting system.

Timing is also key. Mornings and weekdays tend to be quieter, which can give you a more intimate experience and fewer people in the background of your photos. The light is softest in the late afternoon, especially in the sunken gardens, so golden hour ceremonies photograph beautifully here.

Finally, the courthouse is right in downtown Santa Barbara, which makes it incredibly convenient for guests and vendors alike. You’re within walking distance of restaurants, hotels, and the beach—making it easy to turn your wedding day into a weekend getaway.
